Winter

I love this image by Michael Kenna. It's simplicity is beautiful.

Ghost Mothers

In the early days of photography, many well-off families jumped at the chance to have their precious children's likeness captured for eternity. The one trick that they had to deal with next, after finding photographers willing to set up the bulky equipment and travelling to the portrait location, was getting the little babies to sit still for the entirety of the session.

As a result, many photographers enlisted the help of the children's mothers, with often creepy outcomes.

The rare beauty found within Google street view

It is not often when browsing through Google street view that you come across anything of real beauty but Aaron Hobson has found some rather rare examples of what the Google car cam has caught while traveling around the world.

Iconic 'Napalm Girl' photo turns 40

It only took a second for Associated Press photographer Huynh Cong "Nick" Ut to snap the iconic black-and-white image 40 years ago. It communicated the horrors of the Vietnam War in a way words could never describe, helping to end one of the most divisive wars in American history.

Loving Bill Murray

This guy was shooting something with Bill Murray, and he and his friends wanted an autograph. Instead they got this - a slomo walk down a hallway, Wes Anderson style. The best part? Bill insisted on doing the slomo on set, not in post.

Tank man

This image was recently found showing a new angle of an immensely historic event.

This might look ore familiar to you.

Tank Man, or the Unknown Rebel, is the nickname of an anonymous man who stood in front of a column of Chinese Type 59 tanks the morning after the Chinese military forcibly removed protestors from in and around Beijing's Tiananmen Square on June 5, 1989. The man achieved widespread international recognition due to the videotape and photographs taken of the incident. Little is publicly known of the man's identity or that of the commander of the lead tank. Shortly after the incident, the British tabloid the Sunday Express named him as Wang Weilin (王维林), a 19-year-old studen who was later charged with "political hooliganism" and "attempting to subvert members of the People's Liberation Army." However, this claim has been rejected by internal Communist Party of China documents, which reported that they could not find the man, according to the Hong Kong-based Information Center for Human Rights. One party member was quoted as saying, "We can’t find him. We got his name from journalists. We have checked through computers but can’t find him among the dead or among those in prison." Numerous theories have sprung up as to the man's identity and current whereabouts.

Moving photographs

I'm busy doing some research for a project I'm planning, inspired by music videos. These are two of my favourite videos so far.

Radiohead: Simple but beautiful. I like that it's black and white and alternates from silhouette to being lit directly.

This is amazing as it's one shot with a myriad of variations on lighting and movement of angles. LOVE it!

Ten Years Of Polaroid self Portraits

Home Turf

I've just returned fro spending ten days in South Africa. It was wonderful to see a city with such a bad reputation thrive.

Here's is one of the examples of how it is doing so... Very Inspiring.

Lori Nix

This is a reallyintresting Photographer who works with Minitures. Her project “The City” depicts eerie abandoned buildings in an apocalyptic world.

Check out her website in my links sidebar.

Some "Happy-snaps" from our brighton day out. You've got to have a few of these in there too.

This is what Photography students look like when they are out researching.

Wolfgang Tillmans Lecture

Here's the Link to the Tillmans Lecture I attended early last year. Worth a watch.

Research

I've been doing some research on how shows are curated and remembered a talk given by Wolfgang Tillmans at The Royal academy regarding curating. I have spent the entire morning researching his shows and the way he utilises the gallery space in such a unique way to show his incredibly varied body of works. Very inspiring if this is your kind of thing.

Check him out.

Photo Of The day

I love this work by Nicola Kuperus. It is very Guy Bourdin.

Bettina

My friend and I wondered over to the V and A a few month ago to meet Bettina Von Zwehl in her Artists in Residents studio. She was working on her small portraits project at the time. It was a rather bizarre experience as it was literally the two of us wondering around her studio, snooping through contact sheets, bits of clippings and test shots, whilst she chatted to her baby, occasionally asking if we had any questions for her.

The reason I'm bringing this up is b/c I just noticed that the photographers Gallery is selling these prints only to raise funds for their refurb.

Have a look at her website, the link is in my list to the right.

That is all.

Foam Party

I was lucky enough to be able to visit the Foam Gallery in Amsterdam this weekend, and even luckier that the New York Times Magazine show was on.

If you ever get a chance to see Nan Goldin, Gegory Crewdson, Lee friedlander or Ryan Mcginly's work in the flesh you will know how excited I was. Seeing them all at once was mind blowing.

Lee Friedlander's backstage fashion work surprised me the most, it was simply beautiful and although very different from his normal content it still had his very distinct style to it.

Beginning of the End

“Station Chief Bingo, this is Candidate Nat. Operation is complete, decoy assassin has been apprehended and is under general media scrutiny. Cover is preserved.

I'm back from a blogging hiatus. A four day Bender in Amsterdam and the initial research for my dissertation has inspired me to start blogging again, if only to aid my creative memory. Consume my futile attempts at preserving creative inspiration on a blog at your own lesuire.

Over and out.

Procrastination

Whenever you are feeling bored this ensures to keep you busy for sometime. Particularly when you have a lot of work to do!

Debbie

As of last week Irene and I are the very proud owners of a Mick Rock original print of Debbie Harry. We bought it at a live auction after being photographed by Mick Rock himself. It's so amazingly beautiful.

Debbie Harry - New york 1978

Robbin Island

I shot these on Robin Island (The Prison where Mandela was held.) in South Africa.

These are a couple of tests I did with my new lights. They are hardly going to change the world but it was really nice just shooting for the fun of it rather than chasing a deadline.

Invisible light

I love how this image is lit. I'm not sure who shot it or where I even found it but its beautifully lit and the deep colours of the Crimson carpet and the Turquoise walls are incredibly impactful. It's just one of those images where the contents freaks me out a little but my eyes like looking at it.

Guy Bourdin and I

This is a Homage to Guy Bourdin, one of my favourite photographers. It's inspired by his 1960's Triumph Bra campaign. His later work uses a lot of colour, opulent styling and great sets.

If you don't know his stuff it is well worth a look.

Fireworks

A few shots from the 5th November fireworks over Victoria Park, London.

Hasselblad Heaven

This is a portrait I shot of one of my College Friends, Chris using the Hasselblad for the first time. The brief was to try and Capture the character of the person you are shooting.

Domestic bliss

Stephen Klein is a great Fashion Photographer, if you don't know his work you should certainly check him out, he is in my links list to the right.

This is one of my favourite themed, Fashion shoots that Klein shot for W magazine with Brad and Angelina. I love the film stills feel to the staged composition and narrative.

Guy Bourdin - Unseen

This is a short video about Guy Bourdins Latest exhibition, Unseen, which shows unpublished works by this great fashion photographer. It also has an interview with his son. GREAT work

A chat with Nan

I'm busy doing research for my dissertation and nan Goldin features heavily in the planning for it. I found this interview with her and I thought I would share it. She is possibly my favourite photographer.

I would really love to shoot this place...

It's a photographers playground.

Love it!

Sunday Listening

Street Art

As a huge lover of street art I was so pleased to see this movie at my video store yesterday. (I just realised how old I'm getting by using the phrase "Video Sore". Who still goes to a video store?) If like me, you like street art, it is worth a watch!

Brother - The Organ.

If you like the Smiths then you will love love the Organ. I love this song. You may recognise it from the L Word. Oh well, just listen.

Sundays I'm in love

My camera, a full English breakfast, Irene keeping me company and a pair of spandex. Life is good!

Patti Smith

I love this nude portrait of Patti Smith, shot by Robert Mapplethorpe in 1976.

Take me now baby here as I am
Pull me close, try and understand
Desire is hunger is the fire I breathe
Love is a banquet on which we feed

Come on now try and understand
The way I feel when I'm in your hands
Take my hand come undercover
They can't hurt you now,
Can't hurt you now, can't hurt you now
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to lust
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to us
Patti Smith - because the night.
